South Tyrol Marketing Corporation (Südtirol Marketing Gesellschaft), the tourist board and marketing body for the northern Italian province of South Tyrol, is this month offering young photography students across Europe the chance to win a 3,000 euro prize in its annual photography contest.
Open to current Europe-based design or photography students under 31 years old with an interest in travel and picture-story photography, the competition invites submissions from the UK, Austria, the Benelux, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy (except for South Tyrol), Poland and Switzerland, the first set of which must be submitted by 31 March 2010.
Entry for the two-stage competition requires students to choose their own specific creative photography theme and post between eight and 10 photographs on this topic, as printed copies and on CD, to the tourist board in Bolzano by 31 March 2010.
First-round entries will be reviewed in April, with six finalists invited to South Tyrol for a competitive photography session between 1 May and 15 December 2010. The finalists must agree themes for their photograph project and the dates for their travel to South Tyrol together with the tourist board.
Final projects must comprise eight to 10 pictures (300 dpi, size A4) submitted by 15 January 2011. An eight-person international jury, including Getty Images’ director of creative planning, Rebecca Swift, and senior photo editor at London’s National Geographic Magazine, Sadie Quarrier, will review the final six entries. The 3,000 euro prize for the winning photographs will be awarded in February 2011, in South Tyrol

About South Tyrol
South Tyrol, in the Italian Alps between Verona and Innsbruck, is one of Italy’s most impressive regions in terms of natural landscape and architecture. Belonging to Austria until 1919, the region is an eclectic mix of Mediterranean and Tyrolean cultures, reflected in its people, design and cuisine. Home to both the Italian Alps and UNESCO-listed Dolomites, the province’s geographical uniqueness makes it a Nirvana for travellers and creative photographers.
