Ferry company is ‘overwhelmed' by the generosity of customers
SeaFrance Dover-Calais Ferries has spoken out in praise of the generosity of its customers, after learning that they have raised half a million pounds for the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in under three years.
SeaFrance took on the role of lead sponsor of the MCS Beachwatch project in May 2008 and since then has seen customer donations to the charity's work far exceed all expectations.
SeaFrance Managing Director, Robin Wilkins commented, "We are completely overwhelmed by the fact we have been able to raise so much money for this extremely valuable work carried out by the Marine Conservation Society and its volunteers. Most of the money raised has come through our customer donation scheme and it's incredible to think that, in well under three years, we have been able to raise over half a million pounds for the charity".
Marine Conservation Society Director, Sam Fanshawe, says the generosity of SeaFrance and its customers has enabled the Beachwatch programme to continue apace,: " We are delighted with the outcome of our ongoing partnership with SeaFrance and this incredible figure of half a million pounds is a credit to the commitment of both the staff and booking customers, who have clearly taken the MCS message to heart. Beach litter has increased dramatically over the last two decades, and plastic litter in particular has become a massive issue for marine wildlife. The money raised by SeaFrance will help us to continue to expand our Beachwatch programme and allow us take action on the issue, from grass roots to Government."
SeaFrance Conservation Manager Rachel Rissbrook has spearheaded the company's work on this project. She added, "It's great to be involved in such a hands-on project. The Beachwatch scheme mobilises thousands of people around the country to clean and monitor litter on their local beaches. SeaFrance staff have thoroughly enjoyed helping out too, by cleaning and monitoring the beach at Kingsdown. It has been shocking to see the amount of litter on the beach, and it's great to think that we can also play our part in combating the effects of that on our amazing marine wildlife."
