Forget the August holiday rush, wait for the kids to go back to school and take advantage of the late summer sun and the late summer discounts. If you're looking for a fun short break, head to Lille on 4-5 September for a last minute shopping break and take in the carnival atmosphere at the famous Lille Braderie, annual bazaar and flea market, from less than £70pp including hotel accommodation and return crossings with SeaFrance Dover to Calais Ferries.
Just over one hour's drive from Calais, Lille is a bargain hunters' paradise and never more so than during the annual Lille Braderie. A tradition dating back to medieval times, every year the people of Lille bring their unwanted goods out on to the streets of the city and sell them to passers-by in a huge bric a brac festival. For two days and two nights a carnival atmosphere reigns as visitors browse through several kilometres of stalls selling second hand goods. Bargains are guaranteed at this unique impromptu market, where the local fare - Moules Frites - is consumed by the bucket-load.
Stay at the chic 1930s style Best Western Art Deco Romarin Hotel situated within walking distance from Lille's famous galleries, museums, cafes and beautiful architecture and soak up the electric French atmosphere. A double room starts from around £115 per night, that's just £57.50pp based on two sharing a double room, meaning with SeaFrance any duration crossings available from just £25 each way, a short break to Lille is available for £70pp, based on two sharing a car.
SeaFrance operates up to 15 daily return car ferry crossings on the Dover-Calais route. Online fares for a car and up to five passengers start from just £25 each way any duration and from £19 return for a day trip.
