IT'S OFFICIAL - MELBOURNE IS STILL A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

IT'S OFFICIAL - MELBOURNE IS STILL A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

Tourism Victoria 22 February 2010

It's not just a great place to visit - an independent international study has again listed Melbourne as one of the best places in the world to live.

The national liveability survey, conducted by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit*, has ranked Melbourne the third most liveable city in the world, just 2.5 points shy of perfection with a score of 97.5 out of possible 100.

Melbourne edged out several Australian competitors, with Sydney ranked seventh and Perth and Adelaide on equal eighth.

Canadian Winter Olympics host Vancouver was ranked number one, scoring 98.0, while the Austrian capital Vienna ranked second with 97.9. The same cities also held the top three positions last year.

Part of the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, the liveability study assesses which places around the world provide the best and the worst living conditions, ranking 140 global cities on 30 criteria covering stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure.

Each factor in each city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable and rated on a scale of one to 100, where one is considered intolerable and 100 is ideal.

The EIU are not alone in recognising Melbourne's liveability appeal, with the city's population expected to grow by a million to reach five million people in 2030.
Melbourne is also a popular place to visit, attracting about a million international visitors a year who are drawn by the array of food and wine, Melbourne's famous hidden laneway bars, arts and culture, major events, and the city's proximity to wildlife and natural attractions in Victoria's regions.
