Discover the World introduces new adventures in Swedish Lapland this winter

Visit Sweden 2 December 2008

With so much snow and ice around, it's hardly surprising that Swedes are continuously finding innovative ways to enjoy it. Guests at the world-famous ICEHOTEL this winter will be able to experience a host of new and exhilarating activities, such as ice driving, ice fishing and moose safaris on horseback as well as traditional adventures including driving your own team of huskies over the arctic landscape in search of the Northern Lights. What's more, at only 3 ½ hours away on Discover the World's exclusive direct flight between Heathrow and Kiruna, which launched in 2007, Lapland is more accessible than ever before.

Occupying the country's northernmost territories, Swedish Lapland is home to fewer than 5% of the country's population, and comprises unpolluted coast, mountains, rivers and forests. Discover the World offers a huge variety of holiday options to Swedish Lapland appealing to all ages and budgets. Prices start from £881 per person based on two sharing departing 20 December, and include direct flights between Heathrow and Kiruna, three nights accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis (including one night in a standard snow room and other nights in a warm room of your choice) and transfers.

New activities - ranger buggy tours, moose safaris on Icelandic horses, ice skating and ice fishing
Visitors will be able to choose from more activities than ever before this winter thanks to the introduction of new and exciting adventures from Discover the World. These include moose safaris on traditional Icelandic horses through the picturesque forests of Lapland for £85 for five hours and ranger touring, where you can explore the arctic landscape by petrol driven 4-wheel ‘ranger' buggies from approximately £187. Ice skating starts from £25 for an hour and ice fishing on the frozen River Tome will also be available for the first time for £23. These activities are all in addition to the popular favourites such as snowmobiling, snowshoe walking and husky sledging over the arctic landscape.

New Saab ice driving
Those in search of an adrenalin inducing experience will love Discover the World's brand new ‘Taster of Saab Ice Driving' excursion, which gives you the opportunity to experience extreme driving, and have great fun. Due to launch in January 2009, this four-hour excursion is available from £297 as a driver or £104 as a passenger, with a maximum of ten participants. Each participant has manoeuvring tests on the ice in a Saab 9-3 Sport combi (4WD) with a qualified instructor before taking it in turns to speed round the track at speeds of up to 100km/hr. While waiting for their turn the other participants can enjoy coffee and cakes in traditional Sami-style tents, before everyone heads out to take part in a timed rally race on the ice at the end of the day.

More adventurous travellers might want to take to the open road on a seven-night trip with Discover the World's new ‘Self-Drive Saab Lapland Explorer' package. Designed for those with a passion for driving and the desire for a challenge, this trip is the perfect way to explore the dramatic landscape of Swedish Lapland. Starting at the ICEHOTEL and covering more than 800km, the six-day explorer itinerary passes forests and lakes en-route to the quaint Norwegian town of Henningsvaer. The package costs from £1,658 per person including flights, transfers and accommodation, based on two sharing.

New Traditional Lapland package
Discover the World is also introducing a new Traditional Lapland package this season which provides visitors with a real insight into the culture and traditions of the local Sami people. Guests on this three-night package stay in log cabins in the forest where there is the chance to witness the mesmerising Northern Lights and traditional reindeer. This costs from £1,288 per person, including flights, transfers, full board accommodation, a five-hour snowmobiling excursion and 30 minute husky ride.

ICEHOTEL on a carbon negative mission
Most of Discover the World's packages to the region incorporate the famous ICEHOTEL - the world's first hotel made entirely of ice - which is on a mission to become carbon negative for the first time this winter, by introducing wind energy, bio fuel and solar power. What's more, guests will have the opportunity to admire beautiful ice sculptures on display, many of which have been created by British artists this year including Ben Rousseau and INSA.
