Cross over to France from just £14 return per person when a family of five travel in one car

Families tired of staycations should consider France by ferry instead, with SeaFrance offering any duration crossings for a car and up to five passengers from just £35 each way, which works out as little as £14 return per person for a family of five. With this in mind, SeaFrance has put together three ideas for action-packed family breaks this summer. With facilities on tap and a host of family attractions in easy reach, there's something for children of all ages this summer - just a short trip across the Channel.

PGL offers resorts across France, and a SeaFrance favourite is Château de Grande Romaine, Paris. Set in 70 acres of grounds, with tennis courts, a basketball court and football pitch, as well as an outdoor heated swimming pool, there's an action packed itinerary to keep families entertained from archery to zip-lining. The programme also includes a day out at nearby Disneyland® Resort Paris. A seven-night break in July or August including activities costs from £459 per adult, £429 per child aged six-18 or £209 per child aged two to five, with discounts available when sharing a family room. www.pgl.co.uk

Just a few hours drive from Calais is Puy du Fou; another excellent option for a family break - regarded as one of the best theme parks in France. Live jousting, gladiators in a Roman arena, musketeers, Vikings and a phantom bird dance are just some of the attractions on offer that are destined to entertain adults as much as children. In 2011, there's also a brand new ‘Triumph's Sign' epic gladiator show. With rooms sleeping up to five, families can stay in the Gallo Roman Villa in the heart of the park from just €105 (£89) per adult and €43 (£36.50) per child per night on a B&B basis and including entrance to the park. http://www.puydufou.com/en

Enjoying the reputation of being the biggest and best thrill park in France, another nearby option for families this summer is Viking theme park fun at Parc Astérix. Based on the comic book stories of Astérix, this Viking themed adventure park is based in the heart of a protected forest north of Paris and has some of France's fastest roller coasters, water rides and interactive shows. Visitors can meet the Gauls of prehistoric times, step back in time to the Middle Ages, travel through Rome and Ancient Greece, and even shake hands with the Three Musketeers. A family room at the nearby Novotel, St Witz is available from just £75 per night based on four sharing on a B&B basis. www.parcasterix.fr
