South Tyrol 1 October 2010
Following two successive years’ decline in the British ski market, the winter 2010/2011 season will have to promise UK skiers some really exceptional offerings in order to entice high numbers to the slopes. And Italy’s South Tyrol will be covering all bases with its varied clutch of new and refurbished slope-side properties, from a three-star design hotel that brings together local larch and flat-screen televisions to a five-star health resort with in-room infrared saunas and Dolomite-facing balconies.
ACCOMMODATION NEWS
Ski, spa and cigar
Taking its design cue from the surrounding environment, Alpina Dolomites Gardena Health Lodge and Spa will be a five-star health-themed bolthole perched in Alpe di Siusi / Seiser Alm, Europe’s largest high-altitude plateau, when it opens in December. The 56-room hotel will take full advantage of its jaw-dropping location, with each of the eight types of accommodation and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools offering views of the surrounding mountains. The hotel is directly on the slopes of the Dolomiti Superski circuit, with its 460 lifts and cable cars and 1,220kms of pistes, whilst 60kms of meandering cross-country ski tracks also begin at the front door. In case this isn’t enough, qualified ski instructors will be bookable through the hotel.
The rooms and suites will range between 75 and 150 m² (800 to 1,620 ft²), combining modern necessities (high-speed Internet access and double glass showers) with an emphasis on wellbeing (Jacuzzi tubs and infrared saunas) and the environment (Martin Žampach-designed, ethanol-burning “bio fireplaces” and Dolomite-facing balconies).
Luxurious yet genuinely health-focused, Alpina Dolomites Gardena’s spa offering will satisfy health fiends with grooming products by Sothys Paris and Aveda, tepidarium-style herbal bio-saunas (which allow users to adjust heat, moisture and lighting settings) and aromatic steam baths. There’s also a choice of swimming pools - the outdoor option having been smartly designed to resemble a mountain lake - and bespoke health programmes, devised to boost the immune system. Four restaurants and bars will meet guests’ gastronomic needs and offer a selection of places to chill and chat: the organic Mountain Restaurant and Stube (South Tyrolean living room-style eaterie), which will dish up local and Mediterranean-inspired creations; the Alpina Spa Restaurant food for spa cuisine; the Mountain Lodge and Bar, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and wooden floors, and a swish Cigar Lounge, with a range of hand-rolled classics from around the world.
Prices start from 149 euros per person per night on a half-board basis, including a welcome cocktail and complimentary afternoon cakes/snacks.
Chic chalet
Newly renovated and totally modernised for this winter, four-star Chalet Gérard in Selva di Val Gardena / Wolkenstein in Gröden has risen several notches up the comfort barometer. The Mussner owner-family has upgraded the restaurant and bar area and added a relaxation lounge, which comes replete with fireplace and knockout mountain vistas. The six categories of rooms and suites are large - about 30m2 - all boasting balconies or terraces and, in the junior suites, stylish wooden flooring. Single rooms with queen-size beds are also on offer. The chalet offers rapid access to the slopes of Val Gardena and a superb South Tyrolean restaurant, lovingly presided over by Mamma Mussner.
Prices start from 98 euros per person per night on a half-board basis.
Smart style
Located in Santa Cristina / St Christina in the heart of Val Gardena, three-star Smart Hotel Saslong is set to combine South Tyrolean hip design and hospitality with an emphasis on value for money. Opening on 4 December 2010, the 50-room Antonio Citterio-designed gem is extensively decked out in local larch with mod cons in all rooms (powerful rainforest showers and 32-inch flat-screen televisions with satellite TV and built-in radio) and WiFi - available at three euros per day - throughout. To make guests feel at home there’s a relaxation lounge, the “Saslong Corner,” offering hot and cold drinks throughout the day. And chef Norbert Dejaco will rustle up snacks upon demand, too. Saslong’s calling card is its location 1km away from the Sella Ronda ski circuit. It also offers swift access to the Dolomiti Superski area, which is home to Saslong, Ciampinoi, Piz Sella and Seceda (some of Italy’s best known slopes).
Prices start from 32 euros per person per night on room only (based on a minimum stay of four nights). Italian-style breakfast available from 3 euros per person.
